Ma Kelu 馬可魯

Biography

(b. 1954, China)

Ma Kelu was born in 1954 in Shanghai. A self-taught artist, Ma was a member of the No Name Group, a collective of underground artists in Beijing who opposed the government and its official support of Social Realist art in the early 1970s.

During this time, Ma began to experiment in abstraction, pioneering what is now recognized as the modern movement of abstract art in China. After a government crackdown in the mid-1980s, Ma moved to Europe in 1988, and later settled in New York. Here he began to exhibit his paintings in galleries in New York, Berlin, London, Boston and Vancouver, discovering a new audience for his art which further influenced his approach to abstraction. Over the years, Ma’s search for his interpretation of abstraction led to his reduction of the landscape into multi-layered constructions of form and surface, working in limited palette and monochromes. Ma arrived at a method which allowed his paintings to set free the imagination of both himself and his audience as a way of meaning production.

Returning to China in 2006, Ma’s abstract paintings were included in the “No Name Group Retrospective” in Beijing, curated by renowned Chinese critic and art historian Gao Minglu that same year. Tragedy befell Ma the following year in 2007, when shortly after the death of his father, Ma would also lose his son, a young artist and musician who suffered from depression. The pain and loss led Ma to begin producing paintings in his son’s favorite colors, resulting fiercer and bolder composition than earlier works.
